Walk It Off

This simple exercise can be done anywhere and yield dramatic results

An exercise doesn’t have to be intense to be good for you. A simple activity, like taking a walk, often gets overlooked. Walking, slow or fast, can have a huge positive impact on your health.  Strolling at a moderate pace has been known to reduce heart disease, gall bladder disease, diabetes, the effects of arthritis, and risk of stroke.

A brisk walk is shown to have a more dramatic effect in all these areas, especially for your heart. An aerobic walk improves the efficiency of the heart, increases circulation, decreases blood pressure and enhances the respiratory system. Moderate walking can be done once or twice a day for 30 minutes.

If you do a brisk walk, do it every other day to give the body a rest, with lighter walks on the off days. To put walking in perspective, watching TV burns 68 calories an hour. An easy stroll can burn 300 calories an hour. A strong, steady walk can burn 500 calories an hour, but it can also make you hungry and negate any weight loss. A light walk, along with drinking water, can be a better option for people losing weight.  And walking is not just for the great outdoors. Indoor health facilities now offer exercisers specialized tracks and machines and indoor walking tracks. And though walking is low impact, there are ways to make it even easier on joints.  Many people participate in waterwalking in lap pools, which reduces weight on the joints by 75 to 90%,”
